A Special Visit from Filmmaker Mariella Santibáñez

A Special Visit from Filmmaker Mariella Santibáñez

We were honored to welcome Mariella Santibáñez, a German-Chilean filmmaker whose award-winning work has been showcased at more than 150 international film festivals. This visit was part of our program for Grade 11 and 12 students, who are exploring their future career options and had the chance to learn directly from an experienced professional in the film industry.

Miss Santibáñez’s latest productions include Die Affäre Cum-Ex (Other People’s Money), available on ARD Mediathek, and Sachsenhausen – Die Kinder der Überlebenden, available on ZDF Mediathek. She also worked as a producer on Tatort: Hochamt für Toni, part of Tatort, one of Germany’s best-known and most highly regarded television series. Earlier in her career, her documentary short FIND FIX FINISH received international acclaim, while her fictional short REINA was co-produced with ARTE and Bavarian Broadcasting (BR), earning a nomination for the prestigious Mexican Film Award ARIEL 2022. Miss Santibáñez studied film production at the University of Television and Film Munich and film directing at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires.

During her visit, Miss Santibáñez gave students an insightful overview of the many career paths in film, from production, directing, and screenwriting, to cinematography, costume design, set building, legal roles, and post-production. She also offered practical advice on selecting the right place to study, the importance of internships, and how to take the first steps into the film industry.

For our students, hearing directly from such an accomplished filmmaker was a valuable learning experience. Miss Santibáñez’s talk not only highlighted the creative possibilities within film but also provided the confidence and tools to begin planning their own career journeys.

Opportunities like this give our students meaningful insight into potential career paths and help them make well-informed decisions about their future studies and professions.
