GISST Sports Friendly Weekend Fixtures

GISST Sports Friendly Weekend Fixtures

Just last weekend, on Saturday 8th March, several of our BBS Basketball Teams, consisting of U14 Girls, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys, travelled across the city to our neighbours Berlin Brandenburg International School (BBIS) for a day of fixtures.

Our students participated in friendly games against the host school the BBIS “Panthers” and a third school, the “Wolves” from the International School of Wroclaw.

The U14 Girls were well represented by two teams, who played incredibly well and showed both grit and determination in their matches at the weekend.

All of our U14 Girls showed that their understanding of the game, each other, their communication, and general defensive positioning vastly improved and they played with plenty of energy.

The younger U14 Girls however, made up of predominantly Grade 6 students, played at an amazing tempo throughout and worked well on finding space and defending the basket.

These games were a valuable training exercise in preparation for the upcoming GISST Basketball Tournament, to be hosted by Berlin International School (BerIS).

The first game for our Varsity Girls against BBIS was highly competitive. BBS led for most of the match before narrowly losing by a single basket in the fourth quarter. This was a much-improved performance compared to a few weeks ago. The girls limited the number of baskets conceded with an effective zonal defense and passed the ball quickly and accurately to strengthen our attack.

Unfortunately, due to our Varsity Girls having only one substitute, playing a second game immediately after the first proved challenging. BBS started slowly but improved as the match progressed. The second game was a great display of determination and fitness, as the girls refused to give up. They learned the importance of concentration, executing the basics correctly, and moving into space to receive the ball.

The Varsity Boys played and beat the Wolves of Wroclaw comfortably, but were unable to edge out a very strong BBIS team. The players showed plenty of energy, improved in their understanding of the game, succeeded at strengthening individual weaknesses and grew even more as a team.

As there were a few of the team that couldn’t make it on Saturday, the boys had to play with just two substitutes, instead of seven. An incredible effort and exceptional stamina was shown by our Varsity Boys.

BBS expresses its gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Nicholson, Mr. Allum, Mr. Barclay, Miss. Ritchie, and Miss. Canty for their time and support, and for coaching and leading our students and sports teams as they approach their respective GISST Sports Tournaments later this month.
