Scholarship

The Berlin British School ('BBS') offers scholarship programmes for existing students as well as external applicants. Our programmes are designed to recognise exceptional academic ability and potential at different stages of a student’s educational journey. Their aim is to ensure that talented and highly motivated students are able to access and thrive within the BBS education.

In line with our commitment to inclusion, we particularly encourage applications from academically gifted students from low-income families.

Scholarships are available as follows:

To outstanding students from Grade 9 onwards who are already enrolled at the BBS.
IB Diploma Scholarships are open to both existing students and external applicants entering Grades 11 and 12.

All scholarships are awarded through a competitive selection process and are based on academic merit. The award of a scholarship, and the percentage of tuition fees discounted for such an award will be entirely at the school’s discretion.

The BBS offers scholarships each academic year to the value of between 20% and 50% of the tuition fee a year, to students already enrolled at the school in Grade 9 or above.

Application and Selection Criteria for the Award of Scholarships:

An outstanding academic record
An excellent impression – in the form of deep interest in learning, a natural curiosity and an ability to argue in an informed manner – made in an interview conducted by one or more members of BBS staff
An excellent record of school behaviour
A contribution to the extracurricular life of current or previous schools attended, and/or to the wider community
A role model for other students

The size of the students' parents income and financial means will play no part in determining the award of scholarships.

A parent who would like to enter their child for a scholarship should complete an application form, attached, and submit it to the Admissions Secretary. The earlier an application is submitted the more likely a scholarship place will still be available.

Each scholarship is subject to an internal review at the end of the first year and is awarded for a two-year period. Towards the end of of the two-year period, a consideration of the same qualities for which the scholarship was initially awarded, will again be made, to determine whether the scholarship will be re-awarded for a further two-year period.

Scholarship applications may be submitted from existing students from 1 January for entry in August. The deadline for applications is 31 March.

IB Diploma Scholarships

Applications from internal and external candidates are welcome

The BBS offers IB Diploma Scholarships each academic year to existing students and external applicants. Each scholarship awarded ranges between 20% and 100% of the annual tuition fee. In line with our inclusion policy, we are particularly interested in applications from gifted students from low-income families.

IB Diploma Scholarships are awarded following a competitive process and are intended to recognise exceptional academic ability and potential, while ensuring access to a BBS education.

Application and Selection Criteria for the Award of IB Scholarships

IB Diploma Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate:

An outstanding academic record and clear potential to succeed in the IB Diploma Programme
An excellent impression in interview, demonstrated through intellectual curiosity, depth of interest in learning, independence of thought, and the ability to engage in informed discussion
A strong record of school behaviour and engagement
Evidence of contribution to the co-curricular life of their current or previous schools, and/or to the wider community
The qualities of a role model within a school community

These qualities will be identified and assessed by the Scholarship committee through a combination of application review, assessment, and interview.

The award of an IB Diploma Scholarship reflects academic merit and overall suitability for the programme. The value of the scholarship is determined at the school’s discretion following the selection process and confidential review of eligibility criteria.

Application Procedure

Stage 1: Standard Admissions Application

Stage 2: IB Scholarship Application

Completed applications from eligible candidates should include:

Submission of their Grade 9 and 10 school reports
Any additional documentation required by Admissions
Provisional IB subject choices
A personal statement outlining:
- Academic interests and motivations
- Evidence of intellectual curiosity and independent learning
- Aspirations as an IB student at the Berlin British School
Concurrently, a pre-admissions form will be sent to the current school to collect as much information on the student as possible.

Stage 3: Shortlisting

Stage 4: Assessment and Interview

External applicants

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a campus visit and assessment day. Assessments will preferably be conducted at BBS or, alternatively, at the candidate’s current school under appropriate supervision.

Following the evaluation of the assessments, the committee will hold a formal interview (preferably in person but can also take place online) with the candidate to assess their overall suitability for our school.

Internal applicants

The applicant should receive very good or excellent grades (As and A*s) in most subjects at IGCSE mock exams.
Students will participate in a formal interview to be accepted onto the scholarship programme.

Duration and Review

Each IB Diploma Scholarship is awarded for a two-year period (Grades 11 and 12) and is subject to an internal review at the end of Grade 11.

The continuation of the scholarship into Grade 12 depends on:

Academic progress
Engagement with the IB Diploma Programme
Conduct and contribution to school life

Application Timeline

Scholarship applications may be submitted from 1 January from Grade 10 students for entry in August.
The deadline for applications is 30 April.
