Easter Holiday Programme 2011: Language / Study Skills Course for students requiring English language support and help with study skills

This intensive course is designed for Secondary School students from BBS and other schools aged 12 to 14 whose first language is not English, and who wish to improve their understanding and communication of the English language, as well as their study skills. The course is geared to support the individual’s need and is taught in an interactive and fun way. Communicative language games contribute to the course being enjoyable as well as educational. The course is taught by fully qualified and experienced members of Berlin British School staff who have a TEFL qualification and are fluent in German as well as English.

The course focuses on two areas:

• Language skills: As an example of possible learning content, students examine role plays and sketches to work on idiomatic expressions. The past tenses (simple past, past progressive and present perfect) and relative clauses are learned and practised with reference to a variety of different writing genres.
• Study skills: students are given tools and strategies to cope with longer, more complex texts, and tips on how to learn vocabulary effectively by establishing an appropriate learning style preference. Other skills taught include skimming, scanning, summarising, mind mapping and using graphic organisers.

Location and group size

Lessons are held at Secondary school in pleasant surroundings, conducive to learning in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Classes are kept as small and homogenous as possible and will not exceed 10 students per group.
