Year 8 sponsored spelling test
The 131 tricky words learnt and practised beforehand were useful, every day ones, like 'separate' and 'business'. Congratulations to Cheng and Manmohan, who got the most words right in the test, and Victoria and Kathleen, who raised the most money. Thank you to all the sponsors - a total of 130 euros was raised.
200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens' Birthday

For their performance our students reprised their grand finale "Celebrate" from the 2010 Christmas performance of “Bah Humbug” which was loosely based on "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. The students behaved impeccably and were a credit to our school.

Berlin British School visit the British Embassy in Berlin
We were met at the entrance of the Embassy and, having passed through security, walked into the very bright and modern building to await instructions.
A picture of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II took pride of place on the wall in the reception area. Some of the children had their pictures taken next to her. There were also many large display posters advertising ‘GREAT’ Britain and the reasons for her ‘GREATNESS’, including, technology, shopping, culture, History. We then went back to our bus which was parked outside the front of the Embassy and were each given a ‘Union Jack’ flag. The paparazzi then arrived along with British Ambassador to Germany, Simon McDonald. A few photographs were taken of us together, followed by a short ride on the bus to Pariser Platz next to the Brandenburg Gate. We posed for further photos, with the bus and the Brandenburg Gate providing the perfect backdrop in the winter sun and clear blue skies.
It was then back to the Embassy for a much needed cup of hot chocolate and biscuits. This was followed by an explanation of the role of the Embassy and then a quiz with questions about Britain. We were all given a souvenir of a British/German badge and a pen to remember our fantastic visit to the Embassy. We then boarded the coach, to be back at school in time for lunch.
We would like to say a special thank you to the staff at the British Embassy for their warmth, hospitality and kindness, and for making it such an informative and interesting day.
Please see the British Embassy link http://ukingermany.fco.gov.uk/content/en/article/great-launch for further information about the ‘GREAT’ campaign and the school’s contribution towards it.
Varsity Basketball

The Varsity Girls’ team (Susanna, Annicka, Julinka, Felina, Marfa and Aglaya) have been struggling for players and recruited Katharina, Michelle and Julia from the U.14 squad to play in the tournament. We were grateful for their willingness to play as it gave the girls an opportunity to rest during the games. The girls lost 17-34 to BBIS, a respectable score after being 20-0 down in the first quarter. They then struggled to score baskets against BerIS and lost 12-26. The boys’ coach, Goran, was unable to attend the tournament so Mr Ellison led the team. After a tough game against BerIS, losing 29-66, the boys lost to BBIS by 2 points, 46-48, after leading for the duration of the game. Both teams are in action again next weekend at BBIS when they play against Dresden and Prague.
GISST Swimming Gala
There were seven schools competing and a very high standard of swimming was displayed over the two days.
The results were as follows:
Victoria came second in the U.14 Girls 50m Breaststroke

Cheng, Kathleen, Senta and Victoria won the bronze medal in the U14 Girls 50m Breaststroke relay
Nando came second in both the Varsity Boys 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle
Nando, Paul, Phillipp and Tizian came third in the Varsity Boys 50m Breaststroke relay
Cheng, Kathleen, Senta and Victoria won the bronze medal in the U14 Girls 50m IM relay

Nando, Paul, Phillipp and Tizian came third in the Varsity Boys 50m IM relay.
Paul came third in the Varsity Boys 100m Backstroke final
Unfortunately, Christopher had to go home due to illness not long after we arrived. This meant U14 boys could not enter the relay races and also lost a strong swimmer. Jaean, Max and Zdendo all swam some super races. For Karolina and Jaean it was their first ever GISST competition and they have gained valuable experience. It was a thoroughly enjoyable two days and the experience gained at this GISST will lead them to greater heights next year.
Thank you for all your effort and commitment,
Mrs. Standring and Mr. Nicholson

The Teams:
U14 Girls: Cheng, Karolina, Kathleen, Senta and Victoria
U14 Boys: Christopher, Jaean, Max and Zdendo
Varsity Boys: Nando, Paul, Phillipp and Tizian

U14 Girls’ BSSC Basketball league game - 16 January 2012
Within the first minute BBS took the lead and kept it throughout the whole game. The girls played some very good basketball and showed some promising movement, passing and positional balance. It was an extremely promising start to the new season and gave us plenty to work on. The next two games are 26 January against BBIS and 14 February against BCS.

"Time To Celebrate" a hit!
The class teachers wrote the script, Miss Higgins wrote the songs and Mr Hanson designed the set with the help of the students. Mr Garrard said "Last year I thought it can't get better than this...and it has!" Over 200 euros were raised for our school charity "Omaruru Children's Haven" in Namibia.
