Libraries
Significant investment in recent years has put the Libraries at the centre of teaching and learning at Berlin British School. We are proud of not just one, but two brand new libraries.
In March, 2010, the new Secondary School Library opened, and now offers books, DVDs and computer technology spread out over more than 160 square metres. The Library houses fiction, junior fiction, an extensive range of non-fiction items and a collection of reference materials, in addition to university prospectuses and an assortment of periodicals. These, and the suite of fully networked iMac computers, support the distinctive character of the Year 7 to 13 curriculums at Berlin British School. For more information about library services at the school, please contact the Librarian, Mr. David Kinder.
The new Primary School Library opened its doors to dozens of excited young readers in September, 2010, and provides a cosy reading atmosphere to our students in Years 1 to 6. Each week, pupils have a specially designed Library lesson. This could be storytelling, learning about Library organisation and Dewey Decimal Classification, searching for interesting and appropriate materials, or learning about genres or various reference materials. The new Primary School library serves to support literacy and learning for pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2, and the learning materials are divided into age appropriate sections, with fiction and non-fiction drawn from British, European, and overseas writers. Any questions should be passed to the Primary School Librarian, Mrs. Jane Potts.
The Library catalogue from Eclipse, which catalogues not only the Library collection, but also thousands of educationally appropriate websites, is available on the school’s website and around the school. Pupils are encouraged to suggest titles of recommended books to the library staff at any point during the academic year. So, whether our pupils are looking for an inviting place to read quietly, or whether they want to find specific information from print and electronic media, the new Libraries at Berlin British School offer a welcoming one-stop service.
