Physical Education (PE)
At Berlin British School there is a sport for everyone. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, with enjoyment at the heart of it, to encourage all students to continue taking part in physical activity long after they have left school, and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
At BBS, pupils will develop a wide range of skills and the ability to perform successfully. When performing, they think, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also reflect on their individual and team performances and find ways to improve. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles. PE helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and teams, developing concepts of fairness as well as personal and social responsibility.
At each Key Stage
We teach all year groups in mixed ability groups and ensure that all lessons are differentiated to cater for each individual student’s needs.
In Key Stage One, pupils participate in a weekly one-hour PE lesson taught in the gym at Primary School. They also receive a forty-minute swimming lesson taught in the pool at the Olympic complex.
Activities taught: Ball skills, basic game skills, gymnastics and swimming.
In Key Stage Two, pupils participate in a weekly one-hour PE lesson, taught in a range of facilities depending on the activity being studied. They also receive either a forty-minute swimming lesson or another one-hour PE lesson. These lessons rotate on a half-termly basis.
Activities taught: Football, hockey, swimming, dance, handball/basketball, gymnastics, tennis, rounders and athletics.
In Key Stages Three and Four, pupils participate in an 80-minute PE lesson taught in a range of facilities again depending on the activity being studied. They also receive an additional weekly one-hour PE lesson every other half term.
Activities taught: Football, hockey, basketball, health-related exercise, tennis, softball and athletics.
Facilities
BBS has access to a variety of top-notch facilities, including the Olympic complex, where pupils learn swimming, basketball, handball, dance, and health-related exercise. On our new field at Secondary School, we teach football, athletics, softball and rounders. In addition, the synthetic turf pitches at Kühler Weg and the clay courts at the Schlittschuh Club and Maikäferpfad provide hockey and tennis facilities.
Inter House
Every pupil takes part in a range of Inter House sporting events that take place throughout the year. Inter House competitions encourage a sense of belonging and mutual support. Inter House competitions include team building, football, hockey, swimming, basketball, softball and athletics.
G.I.S.S.T (German International Schools Sports Tournaments)
Berlin British School is a founding member of this 10-school organisation. Tournaments are held at schools throughout the country and athletes are accommodated by families from the host school. There are two age categories: Under-14 girls and boys (Year 7-9) and Varsity Girls and Boys (Year 10 -13). Typically, teams travel either on a Thursday afternoon or Friday morning and return on Saturday evening. We train teams and compete in the following competitions: Cross country, football, basketball, badminton, swimming, golf, tennis and athletics.
